15 Jun, 2013

ISLAMABAD: Chief of Awami Muslim League, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed Saturday said that increase in the General Sales Tax would further burden the masses.

Taking part in the budget debate in the National Assembly, he said that prices of dry milk, sugar, oil, and other necessities of life would rise due to increase in GST and inflation would be recorded in double digits. He said that salaried class was already suffering due to inflation.

Sheikh Rashid was of the view that the stock exchange was run by the rich and it had nothing to do with the state of economy.

He expressed the need to stop power leakages and power pilferage. He observed there was no allocation made in the budget for Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline.

He claimed, June 19, was the last date for appeal in the International Court of Justice against its judgment on Kishan Ganga Dam Project but the government had done nothing so far.

He said the government had increased salaries of government employees by 10% and claimed it would have to increase these by 20%.

He said millions of acres of land owned by Pakistan Railways had been encroached upon and the government was getting not a single paisa.

Sher Akbar Khan of Jamat-e-Islami (JI) said that rather than depending on SROs, the government should have taken serious measures to redress the economy. He said that the business community of Malakand Division should be given priority and the affected people of his area should be provided relief.

Later, Deputy Speaker Murtaza Javed Satti adjourned the proceedings of the house till 11:30 am on Sunday.
