27 Apr, 2013

KARACHI: Sindh Caretaker Minister for Law and Prisons Mehmood Yusuf Mandviwalla has said that the promulgation of the Prevention of Defacement of Property Ordinance, 2013 will prevent the nuisance of graffiti and upon promulgation of this Ordinance, it will no longer be possible to ruin the aesthetic beauty of the cities.

Graffiti has been used without any form of fear or restriction and its excessive use has become a mode of cheap marketing by low-level companies, he said in a statement issued on Saturday.

The Minister said that the new Ordinance prohibits defacement of property and makes the offence punishable with an imprisonment for a term of 6 months or fine or both.

He further said that new law also introduces the establishment of an Anti Property-Defacement Task Force which will have persons from the civil society including a member of the electronic and print media.

The Task Force will assess the scope and nature of defacement and suggest ways to augment enforcement capability, survey the efforts of other jurisdictions to combat graffiti and propose a comprehensive Anti Defacement strategy, he concluded.
