Code of conduct for elections' media coverage soon: ECP

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan is close to finalize a code of conduct for the media covering the upcoming general election 2013 to ensure dissemination of credible and unbiased news.

Talking to the newsmen after Commission's meeting with representatives of media organizations, Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmed Khan said the code of conduct for media would get its final shape within few days as the meeting thoroughly deliberated on the matter.

The meeting was attended by Secretary Information and Broadcasting Agha Nadeem, Principal Information Officer Imran Gardezi, Director General Radio Pakistan Murtaza Solangi, Agha Nasir, Imtiaz Alam and Khushnood Ali Khan.

The Secretary ECP said the participants were evolving consensus on the code of conduct that would be finalize following further consultations with representatives of Pakistan Broadcasters Association and PFUJ.

Ishtiaq Ahmed said a complaint cell would be established at the ECP that would consist of representatives of media as well to look into the issues regarding coverage of the general elections.

After the media organizations and bodies had expressed reservations 0n the code of conduct, the ECP had constituted a committee to come up with a consensus code of conduct for media.
