Democracy, freedom of media inter-linked: Kaira

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira on Thursday said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) believed in freedom of expression and independence of media as democracy and media freedom were inter-linked.

Kaira was talking to a delegation of office-bearers of Nowshehra and Peshawar press clubs, which called on him here.

He said that the government was doing its best to facilitate media persons so that they could perform duty according to their professional ethos.

Later talking to media persons, Kaira said that the PPP-led government had promoted politics of reconciliation in the country.

He said that during the tenure of present government, democratic norms had taken roots while in the past democratic culture could not be promoted.

He said that the PPP-led government had put the country forward on the democratic journey.

Appreciating the performance of official media, Kaira said that it had done well in difficult circumstances.

The democratic government has the right to take credit for the good works done during last five years, he added.

About the Bahawalpur-Janoobi Punjab province, he said that a resolution in that regard was adopted by the Punjab Assembly.

Replying to a question, he said that it was a good omen that all the political parties from Balochistan were preparing to take part in the coming general elections.
