India elected as non-permanent UNSC member for two-year term

India on Wednesday was formally elected as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for a two-year term.

During the voting, India got 184 out of the 192 valid votes polled. Apart from India, Kenya, Ireland, Mexico and Norway obtained two-thirds majority in the General Assembly.

India was the endorsed candidate of the Asia-Pacific Group of UN member countries and faced no competition. India will begin its eighth two-year term on January 1, 2021.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday thanked the global community for supporting India’s membership to the UNSC.
