Ahsan Iqbal, four other lawmakers test positive for coronavirus

(Karachi) Four lawmakers including Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Ahsan Iqbal has tested positive for coronavirus, media reported on Wednesday.

According to Iqbal's family, he has gone into quarantine and has self isolated himself at home. Others who contracted the disease are Senator Sana Jamali, MNA Farrukh Habib and MNA Usman Qadri.

Earlier, former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and PML-N leader Maryam Aurangzeb also tested positive for Covid-19.

More than 5,000 coronavirus cases were reported across Pakistan on Wednesday, the highest single-day rise ever, official statistics said.

With 5,385 new cases, Pakistan's tally of coronavirus cases has reached 113,702, already surpassing China and Saudi Arabia, putting the country at number 15 worldwide in terms of cases.

Another 83 patients lost their lives due to COVID-19 across the country, raising the death toll from the pandemic to 2,255. Some 36,308 patients have recovered.

According to the official statistics, authorities have so far conducted 754,252 tests across the country.
