Growing challenge of unemployment

LETTER: Former finance and foreign minister Sartaj Aziz has come up with some highly disturbing facts in relation to unemployment in the wake of coronavirus outbreak in the country. According to him, even before the pandemic, Pakistan had 60 million unemployed. Covid-19 has added to estimated 20 million more. The government's own admission that the virus could render as many as 20 million people jobless lends credence to Sartaj Aziz's estimates. Relaxations in lockdown have caused a huge spike in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases.

The government is trying to strike a delicate balance between lockdown and economic activity. But there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel.
