JOHANNESBURG: South African President Jacob Zuma on Friday gave condolences to victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, offering assistance in the tragedy.

"I wish to extend our condolences to the government and the people of Japan," Zuma said in a statement.

"The people of South Africa share the pain and loss of the loved ones, their homes and property and our thoughts and prayers go to the affected families."

"The South African government wishes the rescue and recovery teams every success in their efforts. The government of South Africa stands ready to assist in whatever manner possible within our limited resources," the statement from his office said.
