After clean sweeping West Indies in the T20 series, the Men in Green are all prepped up to take on the visitors in the 50 over format, to begin today (Friday) at the famous Sharjah cricket stadium.
However, the three matches One Day International is more than a bilateral series between Pakistan and West Indies. After the International Cricket Council (ICC) newly added stipulation allowing only the top-eight-ranked teams direct ticket to for the 2019 Cricket World Cup.
This has left both West Indies and Pakistan, currently ranked eighth and ninth respectively on the ICC table, in a sticky situation, as the teams will not fight for a direct shot at the 2019 Cricket World Cup, to be held in England.
Furthermore, the series is crucial for Pakistan ODI skipper Azhar Ali, who would now have to prove his credentials in the ODI format, facing the public heat after the national cricket team sloppy show against England, losing the series 4-1 earlier this month.
Many called to strip the senior batsman from captaincy, who was a surprise choice for the ODI leadership after Misbah retirement from ODI’s.
