INCHEON: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had no options but to appoint Misbah-ul-Haq as captain till 2015 World Cup, former board Chairman Ijaz Butt said.
"Misbah was only available choice for PCB and it was okay in current circumstances," he told a group of reporters at Bangkok Airport during his stopover on Thursday, reports Ehsan Qureshi.
He expressed the hope Misbah would now be fully focused for the series against Australia and New Zealand in United Arab Emirates before heading for the World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in February/March2015.
He however said Shahid Afridi's appointment as the Twenty20 for two years was not wise because of fitness challenges for such a long time.
He defended his sacking of foreign coach Geoff Lawson of Australia and said that Pakistan team never needed outside coaches. He said appointing Dav Whatmore was also a mistake of the PCB.
Ijaz Butt favoured the appointment of Waqar Younis as Pakistan team coach for the second time.
"Pakistan coaches know their players and their psyche and that could be more benefitting as compared to foreigners," he remarked.
He said that Pakistan coaches are loyal to their own country as compared to foreign coaches.
