ROME: An Italian regional court has suspended an electricity price hike that was due to come into force this month after national consumers group Codacons said the increase would cause "serious and irreparable damage" to families.
As a result of the ruling an uncontested gas price hike will also have to be frozen because the tariff rises were introduced in tandem.
Italy's energy watchdog had given utility companies the green light to raise electricity tariffs by 4.3 percent from July 1 and gas prices by 1.9 percent.
The energy watchdog said it would appeal against the court block, saying it was based on "an erroneous representation of the facts and the law".
The watchdog had said the electricity hike was justified because of a jump in transmission costs.
The regional court based in Lombardy is due to meet on Sept. 15 to discuss the case further.
