RAWALPINDI: Anti Terrorist Court-I (ATC-I) on Tuesday acquitted Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz ((PML-N) MNA Anjum Aqeel Khan and 15 other party workers in a case registered against them for allegedly attacking the Shalimar Police Station Islamabad, torturing police personnel and escaping from the police custody.
Special Judge of the ATC Chaudhry Habib-ur-Rehman gave the acquittal ruling after the prosecutor could not produce sufficient evidences against the accused and the witnesses backed out from their earlier statements. Around nine witnesses out of 10 backtracked from their recorded statements.
Shalimar Police Station had arrested Aqeel Khan in a land fraud case on July 16, 2011 where party workers allegedly attacked the police station and managed to flee along with the MNA.
However, Khan handed himself over to the Kohsar police station in the presence of his lawyer.
The PML-N MNA faced the trial for more than one year and got the acquittal in the case.
