ISLAMABAD: Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah Wednesday said that people involved in the electricity theft must be arrested and punished. Speaking in the National Assembly he said that, "I am in favor, the persons involved in the electricity theft must be sent to jail, if I am involved in electricity theft I am also eligible for the same treatment".
The opposition leader said that the person using electricity must pay bill to the government.
Around 1300 person killed in Karachi due to harsh weather condition and load shedding, the House must discuss the situation and fix the responsibility of it, he said.
"The people died due to harsh weather condition are Pakistani and the responsibility of the issue must be fixed for justice," he added.
He asked the government to stop paying Rs 30 billion per annum to Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) as fuel difference charges as it was not generating the promised electricity.
"We will support the government for closing the KESC or taking over it," he added.
He urged the government to fulfil its promise made during the general election campaign to resolve the issue of energy shortage soon.
"The government must fulfill its promise made with the people of the country for ending power crisis," he added.
However, he was of the view that criticism for the sake of criticism must be stopped as it was the collective responsibility of government and opposition to find out the solution of the electricity crisis.
Syed Khurseed observed that if the independent power plants started in 1996 were not stopped, the electricity situation would have been much better.
He said that the PML-N government should complete its constitutional term and urged the government to take steps for strengthening the federation.
