ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Monday said the government did not believe in restrictions on media, which should realize its responsibilities and formulate a code of conduct for itself.
Addressing the joint sitting of Parliament, the President said with implementation of code of conduct, the people would consider media as a "true representative of their hopes".
"The people of Pakistan feel that along with its freedom, media should also realize its responsibilities and boundaries," he stressed.
He said media in the country was free and playing the role of a watchdog.
He said the country's vibrant and awakened civil society had extraordinary significance in the context of national interest and hopes of masses.
"I expect from the civil society that while performing their role and deciding their priorities, they would give consideration to law of the country, national traditions, society's temperament and feelings of the masses," he said.
This would not only increase their credibility and importance, but would also enable them in playing their real role in shaping up of public opinion, added the President.
