ISLAMABAD: The food exports from the country witnessed nominal increase of 0.59 percent during the first eight months of current fiscal year (2011-12) as compared to the exports of the same period of last year.

The overall food exports during July-February (2011-12) stood at $2.616 billion against the exports of $2.601 billion during July-February (2010-11), according to data of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The food products that witnessed increase in exports during the period under review included rice (other than basmati), exports of which increased by 2.91 percent from $765.128 million to $787.381 million.

Similarly exports of fish and fish preparations increased from $170.274 million last year to $195.284 million during the current year, showing positive growth of 14.69 percent.

Exports of fruits increased y 15.02 percent, from $214.531 million to $246.746 while exports of leguminous vegetables (pulses) from just $0.188 million to $2.662 million, showing 1,315 percent increase.

Exports of tobacco increased by 37.85 percent, from $13.631 million to $18.777 million, oil, seeds, nuts and kernels by 59.84 percent from $10.014 million to $16.006 million, meat and meat preparation by 16.46 percent from $94.004 million to $109.474 million while the exports of other food products increased by 45.80 percent by growing from $365.635 million last year to $533.109 million this year.

On the other hand the overall exports of rice decreased by 6.39 percent by going down from $ 1.390 billion to $1.301 billion.

Among the rice commodities major negative growth of 17.78 percent was recorded in basmati rice, exports of which decreased from $625.035 million to $513.896 million, the data revealed.

The other products that witnessed negative growth included vegetables, exports of which decreased by 36.69 percent, from $107.268 million to $67.908 million.

Similarly, exports of wheat decreased by 53.22 percent, from $206.013 million last year to $ 96.372 this year while exports of spices declined from $29.754 million to $29.310, showing 1.49 percent negative growth.

The overall exports from the country during the period under review witnessed negative growth of 0.48 percent, according to the data which revealed that exports declined from $15.263 billion to $15.189 billion.

Imports into the country, however, increased by 16.36 percent by going up from $25.600 billion to $29.788 billion.

Based on the figures, the trade deficit during the first eight months of the current fiscal year was recorded at $14.599 billion, against the deficit of $10.337 billion last year, showing an increase of 41.23 percent.
