imageKARACHI: Due to the absence of the petitioner, Sindh High Court (SHC) has adjourned the hearing of a petition that sought disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

The SHC division bench was scheduled to hear the petition filed by Moulvi Iqbal Haider, a practicing lawyer and a chairman of Awami Himayat Tehreek Pakistan, who had requested the court to disqualify Nawaz Sharif from holding prime ministership, but the hearing was adjourned as the petitioner was not present.

Earlier, the petitioner had submitted that he had sent the reference to the speaker of National Assembly to disqualify Nawaz Shairf as Prime Minster for hiding his assets at the time of nomination papers for national assembly constituency. He added that speaker of the assembly instead of forwarding the reference to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), decided himself that the reference is not maintainable.

‘ECP is the authority to decide the disqualification matter of any member not the speaker. The speaker is bound under constitution to refer any such reference to ECP,’ Moulvi added.

He requested the court to declare that the speaker of the assembly is not empowered to decide the question arisen through such reference.

The petitioner had also submitted that Nawaz Sharif had filed false affidavit and never disclosed that his family members own the off shore companies. He added that prime minister had hidden his assets and business before the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The court was requested by the petitioner to disqualify Nawaz Sharif and restrain him from holding the prime minister office.
