HOLLYWOOD: British filmmaker Tom Hooper won the best director Oscar on Sunday for historical drama "The King's Speech," at the 83rd Academy Awards.

The 38-year-old used his acceptance speech to tell the extraordinary story of how he came to make "The King's Speech" thanks to the help of his Australian mother, who was in the audience.
