Road accidents have earned Pakistan a dubious distinction as the country has the worst road traffic accident rate in Asia.
According to latest reports, Pakistan is first in terms of a number of road accidents in Asia while ranked 48th in the world. This was revealed in Dunya News programme Dunya Kamran Khan Kay Sath on Wednesday.
The programme also revealed that at least 51,400 people were killed in 97,500 road accidents in the ten-year period from 2004 to 2013.
Deadly traffic accidents are common in Pakistan, partially due to drivers commonly disregarding safety standards and traffic laws.
The last 10 years data on traffic accidents present a horrific picture as average 15 people died every day in traffic accidents across the country. Sindh proved the deadliest in terms of average people killed in accidents, followed by Punjab, Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Most accidents happened due to over-speeding, distractions, entering the road without ensuring safety, driving in the opposite direction, crossing red-lights, improper method of changing of lanes and failing to maintain enough space between vehicles.
Pakistanis also topped the list of causing traffic accidents in 2016 which witnessed the death of 32 from the same country, 30 Indians, 23 Emiratis, 13 Bangladeshi, and 3 Filipinos.
