KARACHI: Khateeb of Masjid-e-Tawwabeen Maulana Aslam Sheikhupuri was shot dead along with his driver Hasan Aziz by unidentified assailants near Rangoonwala Halls, Bahadurabad area, police said on Sunday.
According to a police official, the Maulana was in a car when the assailants, riding motorcycles, opened fire injuring him and the driver seriously and fled the scene. His two guards sustained injuries and were under treatment.
They were taken to Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre, where Maulana Sheikhupuri and the driver succumbed to bullet injuries in chest and head.
Maulana Sahibuddin Azzam, an aide to Maulana Sheikhupuri, said the Maulana remained a faculty member of Jamia Binnoria and Jamia-tur-Rasheed.
Maulana Sheikhupuri was also a visiting teacher to several institutions including Al-Qur'an Courses Centre in Bahadurabad where he used to deliver Dars-e-Qur'an to ladies every Sunday.
He left behind by two widows, five sons and a daughter.
