WASHINGTON: The United States noted Thursday that there had been a "slight improvement" in the fighting in Ukraine, but insisted the ceasefire was still being violated.
"There is a reduction we've seen over the past two days," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said when asked if the truce was still being broken.
She said that was "a good thing."
"But there are still violations... I wouldn't go so far as to call it a positive step," Psaki told reporters.
"It's just a slight improvement but obviously there are still violations across eastern Ukraine."
And she warned that none of the actions seen so far would be enough to ward off new sanctions against Russia and the pro-Moscow rebels which the US has threatened to impose.
US Secretary of State John Kerry is to meet with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Geneva on Monday, on the sidelines of a major conference of the UN Human Rights Council.
Their talks will come only days after Kerry accused Russian officials -- without naming them -- of lying "to my face" over Moscow's involvement in the Ukraine conflict.
