imageLAHORE: The Lahore High Court Wednesday reserved verdict on a contempt petition filed by Syed Sibtul Hassan Shah alias Double Shah against non-compliance of court orders for allowing remissions to him.

The bench comprising Justice Mehmood Maqbool Bajwa and Justice Miss Aalia Neelam was hearing the matter.

The petitioner's counsel Asad Manzoor Butt arguing before the court submitted that the Lahore High Court ordered jail authorities to allow various remissions to Sibt ul Hassan on a petition filed by him. However, the authorities approached Supreme Court after a delay of 313 days against the order but the same was rejected, he added.

He said that the petitioner could have been be released if the jail authorities have complied with the court orders. He pleaded the court to initiate contempt proceedings against officials concerned for not complying with court orders and order release of the petitioner as well.

However, the prison department maintained that the petitioner could not be released as the remissions could not be granted to him as per Supreme Court orders in identical matters.

The bench after hearing detailed arguments reserved the verdict on the contempt petition.

An accountability court sentenced Syed Sibtul Hassan Gilani, alias Double Shah, to 14 years in jail on charges of defrauding public at large by collecting their money with a promise to pay them double in return, in 2012.

Shah was arrested by the Ghakhar police of Gujranwala in a Rs30,000 robbery case in 2007. Later, he was handed over to NAB, which accused him of Rs2 billion financial fraud with general public. The fraud was declared one of the biggest financial scams in Pakistan.
