WARD KABUL: Afghanistan and the US on Sunday signed a deal on special forces operations in the insurgency-wracked country, an AFP reporter saw, with Kabul saying it will put Afghans in the lead on controversial night raids.

Afghan defence minister Abdul Rahim Wardak and General John Allen, the US commander of NATO-led forces, inked the deal, with Wardak saying: "The signing of this document is a fundamental step towards Afghan national sovereignty."
