KARACHI: The 76-year-old Pope Francis, who is well known for his modesty, will wash the feet of young prisoners in a youth detention centre near Rome.
Thousands of pilgrims and tourists are arriving in Rome to attend ceremonies during the holy week ahead of Easter.
The washing of feet on the Thursday before Easter is a Christian tradition commemorating Christ’s Last Supper. It is a part of papal calendar of events running up to Easter, the most important festival in the calendar of the Catholic Church.
Reportedly, the 12 prisoners who will have their feet washed will be chosen from different nationalities and religious confessions.
On Sunday morning, the pope will celebrate Easter mass in front of thousands of pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square to deliver his first “Urbi et Orbi” message.
