imageDUNEDIN: New Zealand snapped a stubborn fifth-wicket West Indies partnership between Darren Bravo and Narsingh Deonarine just before tea Friday as they edged towards wrapping up the first Test in Dunedin.

Deonarine was out for 52 after putting on 122 with Bravo who remained unbeaten on 146 with Denesh Ramdin on four at tea on the fourth day.

After being forced to follow on after making 213 in their first innings in reply to New Zealand's 609-9 declared, the West Indies require a further 82 runs to make New Zealand bat a second time.

The West Indies' second innings fightback came after New Zealand claimed two wickets early on the fourth day including the key scalp of Shivnarine Chanderpaul to have the tourists at 185 for four.

Marlon Samuels was was first to go, dismissed for 23, caught and bowled by Tim Southee, then Chanderpaul departed cheaply for one.

The 39-year-old who top scored in the first innings with 76 was removed leg before wicket for the second time by a left-arm quick in the match, this time to Neil Wagner after falling to Trent Boult in the first innings.

With the wicket holding no terrors, Bravo and Deonarine forged a solid recovery for the West Indies, with Deonarine aided by two dropped catches.

Deonarine brought up his fifth Test 50 clipping Corey Anderson to the boundary for four but his luck ran out in the next over he faced from the New Zealand all-rounder when he nicked a ball through to wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Bravo has survived a confident appeal for caught behind when on 44 and was also dropped on 82 in his innings which includes 21 boundaries.

For New Zealand, Southee, Boult, Wagner, Anderson and leg spinner Ish Sodhi have taken a wicket each.
