imageATHENS: English goalkeeper Luke Steele has extended his contract with Panathinaikos until the summer of 2018, the Greek Super League club announced on Monday.

Former England youth international Steele, 30, joined the Athens team last year and made 29 appearances last season.

"I'm over the moon. It is an important day for me and my family," said Steele, who was on the books at Manchester United and West Bromwich Albion earlier in his career before playing for Barnsley.

"I feel a connection with the club and being sincere the first month I didn't know how it would be.

"But I know I like it and I appreciate it, because here it is more professional than I thought.

"Panathinaikos is a club with great history. Football is a short career so you have to take decisions. It is important to make good choices and to feel wanted as I do in my club."

Panathinaikos finished second behind champions and bitter rivals Olympiakos in last season's Greek Super League and will enter the Champions League at the third qualifying round.
