LAHORE: Secretary Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Punjab Irfan Elahi has urged the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Lahore to work with the L&DD department for the development of livestock sector with focus on small farmers.
He said this at a meeting with UVAS Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha and senior faculty members during his maiden visit to the City Campus of the university on Thursday.
He called for evolving a comprehensive strategy to resolve the field problems in the livestock sector which, according to him, had immense potential for development. He said that the country could earn a handsome foreign exchange by exporting meat.
He desired that the Veterinary Research Institute and the Quality Operation Lab of the UVAS should develop joint research projects for funding from various national and international donor agencies. He urged the need for producing vaccines against various fatal animal diseases. He also lauded the role of the UVAS in promoting higher education in veterinary and animal sciences and related fields.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor gave a detailed briefing on the educational, research and extension programmes of the university and its future plans. He said that the UVAS was producing skilled human capital by offering 10 undergraduate and 24 four postgraduate degree programmes to cater to the need of the industry. He said that there was dire need to work on enhancing buffalo productivity.
