imageKARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Siddiqui has said that crackdown against profiteers and adulterators continued unabated during which 240 shopkeepers including milk, flour, pulses, fruit, vegetables, meat and chicken sellers were challaned on Friday last and Rs. 513,300 were collected from them as fine.

The areas where action was taken included Saddar, Civil Lines, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e- Hijri, Liaquat abad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi,Bin Qasim, Ibrahim Hyderi, New Karachi, Landhi, Korangi and Model colony, he said in a statement issued here on Saturday.

He further said that during the crackdown conducted by Assistant Commissioners in the city, 50 milk sellers, seven grocers, 24 chicken sellers, 106 vegetable vendors, 52 fruit sellers and one meat seller were challaned.

Another 27 shopkeepers were sent to jail for their repeated conduct.

The campaign would continue till these elements give up this practice and start selling items according to official rates.

Administrative officials have been detailed at vegetable wholesale markets to monitor auction of fruit and vegetable items at night.

This is helping greatly in bringing down retail prices of these commodities, he maintained.
