australia-stock-exchangeMELBOURNE: Australian shares gained 0.3 percent on Monday to a fresh four-month high, lifted by the materials sector as a recent recovery in commodities prices and a flurry of central bank stimulus fuelled hopes for stronger global growth and demand.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index rose 12.5 points to 4,402.5, according to latest data, just above the 4,400 level that has proved tough to breach. The benchmark rose 1.2 percent to a four-month closing high on Friday.

New Zealand's benchmark NZX 50 index ended up 0.7 percent at 3,817.2.
