The police have booked Bollywood controversial actress Sunny Leone for obscenity, after a Hindu activist filed complaint against the actress for promoting vulgarity on her website and insulting dignity of women.
According to Indian media reports, the offence was registered based on a complaint by Anjali Palan, a Hindu activist who stated that while surfing the internet she found several obscene posts and pictures of the actress. Also, Palan found ‘objectionable’ material on the actor’s website Sunneyleone.com. “Such posts poison the minds of people and especially children,” she said in her complaint.
The charges are under the IPC (sections 292, 292A and 294, all dealing with obscenity) the Information Technology Act (section 67, obscenity in electronic form), and the Indecent Representation of Women Act (section 3 and 4, prohibition of dissemination of indecent representation of women). The maximum punishment, imprisonment up to five years or fine up to Rs 10 lakh or both—is under the IT Act's section 67, Indian media reported.
No immediate action has been taken yet but the police cyber cell is looking into the matter. Cyber law expert said, “Indecent representation of women is a non-bailable offence, with a maximum imprisonment for five years. The actor could face arrest”.
