According to English media reports Hollywood film ‘Thor: The Dark World’ retained the top spot at the North American box office in its second weekend. However, director Malcolm D. Lee’s film ‘The Best Man Holiday’ came close to the superhero flick with raking in over $30 million and sits in the second spot.
The ‘Thor’ sequel grossed the $38 million mark, which is almost 55% drop from its opening weekend when it notched over $86 million.
The Marvel film, which was produced on a budget of $170 million, has already earned $147 million after two weeks of its release. It is now heading to break the records of its predecessor, which raked in $181 million domestically.
The distributers of African-comedy ‘The Best Man Holiday’, Universal Pictures, expected the film to earn a modest $17 million.
“There’s no crystal ball in guessing this stuff," Universal's President of distribution, Nikki Rocco said in a statement.
“It was fair to think this film— where 87% of the audience was African American—would open in the high teens.”
That it nearly doubled that estimate is “a phenomenal result,” he added.
“I would never have thought in my most non-lucid moment to expect this -- the picture only cost $17-million.”
‘The Best Man Holiday’ is a sequel to the 1999 film ‘The Best Man’. Both films are directed by Malcolm D. Lee and features number of same actors including Taye Diggs, Terrence Howard and Nia Long.
