Sports Action, second prize stories

Ruth Frith, aged 100, competes in the throws pentathlon at the World Masters Games. The World Masters Games, held every four years, is the world's largest multi-sport event, with mature competitors from across the globe taking part in 28 different sports. The 2009 games in Sydney attracted 28,292 participants, two of them over 100 years old.

Craig commenced work at the Sydney Morning Herald in 1985. As with all photographers working for newspapers in Australia at that time, he covered all areas of photography for the paper such as news, sports and arts. While he enjoyed the variety of work encountered as a press photographer, his real love was sports photography.

In 1991 he was appointed to shoot sport full time for the paper and remained in that position until leaving Herald in 2008 in order to persue a freelance career. His work has taken to major international events, both in Australia and Overseas over the last 20 years including Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Rugby World Cups, and World Swimming Championships.

During this time he has won over 35 International  Awards, including 6 World Press Awards, and more than 70 National Awards for this photography. In 2007 he had the honor of being invited to be on the judging panel for the World Press Photo Awards held in Amsterdam.

Craig continues to shoot sport, Corporate events, PR and Feature work for various clients.
