UNITED NATIONS: The UN Security Council on Thursday decided to boost the UN force in the Central African Republic by 1,050 peacekeepers as the country prepares for elections.
The 15-member council unanimously adopted a French-drafted resolution that provides for an increase of 750 military personnel, 280 police and 20 corrections officers.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon had asked for the troop increase in February, arguing that the additional forces would help enhance security during and after the elections.
Presidential and legislative elections are due in July and August, capping CAR's long road to recovery after the violence that was unleashed following a March 2013 coup.
The 9,000-strong MINUSCA force was deployed in September, taking over from an African Union-led mission.
