KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Wednesday issued notice to DIG traffic police and motorway police officer to explain what measures were taken for removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG fittings from the public transport vehicles.
A division bench, headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abassi, had taken up a petition filed by a non-government organization, United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, seeking removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits from public and private transport.
Rana Faizul Hassan, representing the NGO, submitted that several people had lost their lives due to the use of substandard gas cylinders in public transport, but the authorities concerned failed to take action against such traffic violations.
He said the authorities had failed to implement the court order regarding removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits after lapse of more than a year.
He pleaded the court to order removal of substandard cylinders and government-verified cylinders/CNG kits used by public and private transport to avoid accidents.
Earlier, the bench had observed that time and again it had issued directives for removal of substandard gas cylinders and CNG kits but no positive steps appeared to have been taken by the provincial authorities.
It directed provincial transport authorities and deputy inspector general (DIG) traffic to take measures for removal of substandard gas cylinders/tanks and CNG fittings from the public transport authorities and submit compliance report within one month.
