KARACHI: Chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, Karachi, Hafiz Naim ur Rehman has urged the government to announce a public friendly drug policy for the country.
The much warranted drug policy, he said must provide needed relief to the masses through easy availability of quality drugs at cost effective rates.
Taking strong exception to reported proposal for increase in the cost of medicines by 18%, Hafiz Naim ur Rehman said it would be an absolute violation of human rights as medicines are among essential necessities of life that ought to be available at minimum possible cost to the patients.
"Any raise in the cost of drugs and medicines would be grave injustice with patients pertaining to low and middle income groups," he said.
Hafiz Naim ur Rehman also registered his deep concern over the growing influence of pharmaceutical companies on policies related to price control and said those at helm of affairs need to realize their responsibilities towards masses.
In a scenario where masses, with large majority living below poverty level any raise in drug cost is absolutely unjustified, said the chief of JI-Karachi.
He said lack of facilities at public sector hospitals and exorbitant expenses and charges at private sector healthcare facilities are the facts that can not be ignored demanding immediate attention of governments at both federal and provincial levels.
