LAHORE: Punjab Government has earmarked an amount of Rs 64,970 million for the development of school and higher education sectors in the budget 2016-17.
According to the budget documents, Rs 47,760 million have been allocated for School Education and Rs 17,218 million for Higher Education.
In addition to that, Rs 962 million have been allocated for Special Education and Rs 1,883 million for Literacy and Non Formal Basic Education Department.
The Punjab government also allocated a sum of Rs 12,000 million for various projects of the Punjab Education Foundation, Rs 3000 million for Daanish Schools, Rs 4000 million for Punjab Education Endowment Fund (PEEF) and Rs 2000 million for the Lahore Knowledge Park including IT and Engineering Universities which would be established in Lahore under Public Private Partnership mode.
In school sector, government will utilize funds for provision of missing facilities, IT labs in 500 schools/higher secondary schools having highest enrolment, provision of 12,500 additional class rooms in over crowded schools, reconstruction of 4063 dangerous buildings of schools, opening of 500 new primary schools through PEF, internal merit scholarships, solar systems and teacher training.
Similarly, in higher education sector, the government will provide funds for missing facilities in 49 colleges, sub campuses of universities in remote areas, establishment of 36 degree colleges in Punjab, distribution of 100,000 laptops, new women universities in Sialkot, Multan, Bahawalpur and Faisalabad, Khawaja Farid Engineering and Technology University in Rahim Yar Khan, Knowledge Park Lahore, Endowment fund increase and other projects.
Special funds have been earmarked for Southern Punjab and districts Development Programme.
An amount of Rs 784 million has been allocated for Special Education and government will utilize these funds for various projects including Inclusive Education programme in Bahawalpur and Muzaffargardh, building for Slow Learners Institute Bahawalpur, Special Education Centre in Bahawalpur, Kallur Kot Bhakkar,Layyah and Multan. Special education centres in Lahore would also be upgraded.
For Literacy department, the government will provide Rs 1880 million for eight ongoing and 10 new schemes.
In addition to this, Punjab finance minister told in her budget speech that besides the development funds, total budget for the schools education sector including funds of the district governments and other expenditures has been increased upto Rs 256 billion.
