imageISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways oil reserves have been increased from two to twelve days, which is a great achievement of the PML-N government.

In the past, Pakistan Railways used to have only one or two days oil reserves, which had created difficulties to the organization and for the travellers, an official told APP on Tuesday.

He said that Pakistan Railways should have oil reserve for atleast 15 to 20 days to meet any emergency.

"The government is keen to transform Pakistan Railways into a profitable entity and expand its operations to meet the present and future passenger and cargo demands in an appropriate manner," he added.

He said that arrangements are being made to acquire locomotives on lease without any further investment, adding the passenger trains have been capped at 96 per day.

"182.926 acres of railway land worth Rs1955.429 million has been retrieved from illegal occupants during operation against land grabbers," he added.

The official said that availability of locomotives has been enhanced from eight to twenty on freight pool on daily basis to generate more revenue.

With increased focus on freight operations, two oil trains from Karachi per day for Lal Pir have been commissioned, the official said.

Pakistan Railways has expedited its efforts towards adding new locomotives in the system. The deal has signed with China Southern Railways (CSR) for 58 locomotives and 23 new locomotives to be added in January 2014, he said.

He said that six air conditioned business coaches were attached with two rakes having capacity of 324 passengers that would generate Rs 1.06 million revenue at 100 percent carrying capacity on daily basis.

The official said that passenger earnings have started showing an upward trend.

"Pakistan Railways has expedited execution of Karachi Circular Railways (KCR) and is working in close coordination with provincial government, Sindh, to complete the project on fast track basis," he said.
