imageISLAMABAD: Minister for Commerce, Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan has represented Pakistan at the Antalya International Horticulture Expo 2016 held at Antalya, Turkey.

The expo was organized by the Ministry of Agriculture of Turkey in which nearly 40 countries participated and exhibited their expertise in the horticulture sector, said a press release issued by the Ministry of Commerce here Saturday.

Pakistan set up its Horticulture Garden in the Expo in a thematic way which portrayed the cultural diversity in the country along with the Pakistani specialties in the horticulture sector.

Pakistani private sector also took lead in the Expo and exhibited the premier quality, taste and nutritional value of Pakistani fruits and vegetables.

Different varieties of flowers were also presented which caught the attention of visitors.

Speaking on the occasion, Dastgir said horticulture was a traditional agricultural sector of Pakistan which provided livelihood to small farmers.

He said Pakistan was bestowed with great diversity in geographical and climatic conditions which results in production of wide range of fruits and vegetables across the country that were recognized in the world due to their unique taste.

The government had introduced several awareness campaigns to train the farmers in proper growing, harvesting, grading and packaging of the horticulture produce to fetch a premium value in the international export markets, he added.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erodgan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Speaker of Turkish Majlis (National Assembly) and several minister participated in the inaugural session of the Expo.

The Expo also showcased the new technology and farm equipment used in the modern-day horticulture.

The Expo presented the impact of horticulture practices on the environment and the mitigating strategies practiced by progressive farmers.

The minister also held meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erodgan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and expressed his appreciation at holding the Horticulture Expo successfully.

The leaders also talked about the trade liberalization negotiations going on between the two countries and resolved to reach on early conclusion on the negotiations.-
