manglaISLAMABAD: The power shortfall has reduced to 1,932 MW due to recent rain spell and improved water level in dams was the reasons of reduction in power short fall.

Talking to a private news channel, PEPCO spokesman Ijaz Rafique said Mangla Dam was generating only 200 to 300MW of electricity due to less release of water as the dam was being filled after completion of the Mangla raising project.

He said water in the dam stood at the level of 1,207 feet, which would be enhanced to 1,210 feet and after the dam was filled, PEPCO would start receiving 1,000MW of electricity. From Tarbela dam, he added, 3,600MW was being received.

PEPCO spokesman said that the total power generation stands at 13.782 MW against the demand of 16,997 MW, leaving a gap of 3300 MW.

This has led to load-shedding up to 6 hours in cities and 10 hours in rural areas of the country, he added.

He said the break up of the country's present power generation is as follows: hydel 6080 MW and thermal 1607 MW while the electricity coming from IPPs stands at 5699 MW.

To a question, he said the government was negotiating with nine independent power producers (IPPs), who had served notices to the government invoking financial guarantees.

He said receivables of PEPCO from government departments and private consumers stood at Rs 300 billion.
