While anno-uncing his resignation from the chairmanship of Public Accounts Committee (PAC), Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shahbaz Sharif has called for mid-term polls, claiming it is the only way to fix the ailing economy.
Talking to a group of journalists at his chamber in the Parliament House Saturday, Shahbaz said that his party wants to be the voice of public and will speak for their rights. Claiming that he "never saw such an anti-public and oppressive budget in the history of Pakistan," Shahbaz said that high quality medicines were free in the hospitals during his party's rule and "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) not only increased prices of medicines but also stopped their provision to the hospital."
He said that the PML-N has decided to resign from the parliamentary committee formed to probe the general election, adding that the All-Parties Conference (APC) will 'save democracy.' Shahbaz said that the prevailing situation of the country demands mid-term election.
"We condemn the censorship imposed on media. Fascist tactics are being used by the government. We have asked MNA Javed Latif to present a report on the security of the journalists in the Parliament soon," he said. He also condemned the assault on the president of Karachi Press Club.
Talking about the ban on use of word 'selected' in the Parliament, Shahbaz said that the word is neither inappropriate nor an abusive one. "What word should we use in its replacement?" he asked. He also lamented the 'oppression and injustice' being done with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
"Such injustices even did not happen during the fascist governments. There were permissions for meeting the inmates during General Musharraf's rule. We will fight legal and political battle for our rights," he added.
Talking about the formation of Rahbar Committee in the APC meeting, Shahbaz said that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Ahsan Iqbal would represent Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the committee.
To a question about the replacement of Chairman Senate Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, Shahbaz Sharif said the decision in this regard would be taken at the forum of Rehbar Committee.
While condemning the torture on the president Karachi Press Club and anchor of a private news channel allegedly by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) ministers and leaders, he said PML-N strongly condemns such acts against freedom of speech. Shahbaz claimed that PML-N always stood with journalist community for freedom of media.
The opposition leader said that there were only political differences among political parties in the past but the situation is now totally different, adding intolerance is rising in the society.
To another question, Shahbaz Sharif criticised the federal budget 2019-20 and called it anti-poor, adding that he never saw this type of situation of the treasury benches in his 30 years political career.
The opposition leader said the government used negative tactics while the opposition members participated in the budget session in a meaningful way.
