MEXICO CITY: Mexican state oil giant Pemex said on Monday that its Salina Cruz oil refinery, in the southern state of Oaxaca, was operating normally after teacher protests turned violent over the weekend, leaving at least eight people dead.
On Friday, Pemex said it could be forced to shut its largest refinery if protests and road blockades disrupted fuel transportation. By Monday, however, a Pemex spokesman said the refinery, which can process 330,000 barrels per day, was operating without disruption.
"It still hasn't had to stop at all," the spokesman said.
The teacher protests erupted on Sunday after anti-riot police moved in to dislodge protesters blocking a highway. Television footage showed chaotic scenes of men running from police as gun fire rang out.
It was the worst incident in a spate of protests over the past several months against education reforms that the government pushed through three years ago.
