6.9 quake hits coast of Peru: USGS

WASHINGTON: A major 6.9 magnitude quake struck along the coast of central Peru on Friday, the US Geological Survey reported.

It said the quake occurred at 1854 GMT some 298 kilometers (185 miles) southeast of Lima. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a widespread tsunami warning, but cautioned that quakes of this magnitude can cause destructive local tsunamis.
