Tesla to build world’s largest lithium-ion battery

Elon Musk’s Tesla has claimed to build up the world’s largest and most powerful lithium-ion battery within a time period of 100 days.

Marking this as the second major deal in Australia, a bidding process nominated Tesla to develop a Power-pack system to work with the Hornsdale Wind Farm close to Jamestown, South Australia.

The company is expected to supply complete energy storage system for the wind farm by means of a 100 MW/129 MWh Powerpack system – enough to power 30,000 homes. The energy generated by the wind farm, owned by French renewable energy provider Neoen, would be used for charging the Powerpack.

Futurism reported, according to Tesla’s press release, “Upon completion by December 2017, this system will be the largest lithium-ion battery storage project in the world and will provide enough power for more than 30,000 homes.”

Musk also confirmed on Twitter that the Hornsdale Powerpack system would be the world’s highest power battery system. This project will probably make South Australia’s power grid more dependable through providing energy in peak hours. Musk informed the reporters that this system would be three times more powerful than any system on Earth.

Moreover, as Sydney Morning Herald stated, the South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill remarked this to be an “extraordinary collaboration” and also that this project will alleviate the country’s energy system along with reducing electricity costs. “Battery storage is the future of our national energy market, and the eyes of the world will be following our leadership in this space,” said Weatherill.

Musk also agreed that his company had to triumph over the technical hazards related to building a project at such a large scale; however, he said that Tesla was confident of its success.
