ISLAMABAD: National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Tuesday approved Rs 1.90 per unit reduction in power tariff for May under monthly fuel adjustment mechanism.

This decision was made during a public hearing chaired by chairman NEPRA Tariq Saddozai.

In a petition, Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has sought Rs 1.89 per unit on account of monthly fuel price adjustment.

The regulator approved Rs 1.90 per unit decrease in power prices for all power consumers except K-Electric and those using 100-300 units.

The relief would be given in billing of June.

In the petition, the CPPA said a total of 10.880 billion units were sold to the distribution companies during May.

The CPPA informed that some 30 per cent power was generated by gas and furnace oil, 7.78 per cent from RLNG and 30.17 per cent by hydel while gas share remained 17.64 per cent during May.

The CPPA said some 10.8 billion units were sold in May costing Rs 53.1 billion.

Meanwhile, the NEPRA chairman said the authority's investigative team was preparing report over power breakdown in Karachi adding that the report would be approved in a week.

He said power situation was also very complicated in areas of Hyderabad and Sukkur Electric Supply Companies and the NEPRA teams were also looking into it.
