imagePakistans opening batsman Azhar Ali, good form with the bat continues after he remained 66 not out against the Aussies at the first Day of the second Test match at the MCG.

In doing so, Azhar reached the 1,000 run mark with an average of well above 55 in 2016. He became only the fifth Pakistani batsman to accumulate 1,000 runs in a calendar year after Muhammad Yousuf, Younis Khan, Inzamam ul Haq and Mohsin Khan.

Azhar who has come a long way after making his Test debut back in 2010, against England at Lords, has since been one of the consistent run makers for the country in the games longer format.

Azhar also managed to hit two hundreds and five fifties in 2016, including a triple ton against the West Indies in October, becoming the fourth Pakistani to achieve this feat and the first in a Day Night Test match.

At the moment, Englands middle order batsman Joe Root is the leading run scorer for Tests in 2016, with 1477 runs. However, it is pertinent to inform, that Pakistans Muhammad Yousuf holds the record for most runs made in a calendar year by any batsman, he made 1788 runs in 2006.
