whitehouseWASHINGTON: The White House said Monday it was "confident" that a deal could be reached with Republicans to avert the looming fiscal cliff, though it said work still "has to be done."

 

"We remain confident that we can achieve an agreement," White House spokesman Jay Carney said, adding that President Barack Obama had spoken to Republican House speaker John Boehner and top Democratic senator Harry Reid over the weekend.
