KUWAIT CITY: Kuwaiti lawmakers have overwhelmingly approved sweeping changes to sports laws repealing legislation which has led to the suspension of the Gulf state by international sports organisations.
But it was not immediately clear if the changes would satisfy the demands of international bodies.
Under the new changes approved late Sunday in parliament by 40 MPs to six, all sports laws issued between 2007 and 2015 have been repealed and a law issued in 1978 was reactivated with some amendments.
The new legislation gives the government the right to dissolve all sports clubs and federations in addition to Kuwait's Olympic Committee.
Kuwait was suspended by world's football governing body FIFA in October and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over government interference in sports.
The international sports organisations have asked Kuwait to amend domestic laws to prevent any government interference in federations before lifting the suspension.
During the debate in parliament, a number of Kuwaiti MPs said the new legislation would not lead to the lifting of the ban on their country.
