imageCLEVELAND: Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco was hit in the face by a line drive off the bat of Melky Cabrera on Tuesday in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

The Indians said Carrasco had apparently escaped serious injury, with initial tests showing no indication of concussion or broken bones.

"He went through all the tests... and there is no fracture," Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. "It is a contusion to a bruise to the jaw. And a pretty good one.

"Obviously, we have to check him in the morning. But in the big picture, we probably dodged a bullet."

The moment was a frightening one, Carrasco going down hard on the mound when the shot from Cabrera, the second batter of the game, struck him in the right side of the face.

After collapsing face down, Carrasco sat up and was holding his face as he was helped onto the back of a cart.

The 28-year-old agreed to a new four-year contract with the Indians last week after posting an American League-best 1.30 ERA over his final 10 starts last season.

In the fledgling season the Indians are already dealing with a spate of injuries. Position players Yan Gomes, Nick Swisher and Zach Walters as well as well as pitchers Josh Tomlin and Gavin Floyd are all sidelined.
