imageKARACHI: Women workers of Jamaat-i- Islami (JI) are confident of their party's victory in the NA-246 Karachi by-polls, scheduled to be held on April 23.

Given the confidence level, they seem to be little convinced that their leaders may make compromise with Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf (PTI), their main ally in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The constituency prior to arrival of Muhajir Qaumi Movement on the scene in late 1980s, had been a JI's stronghold and the part was again on a strong foot to regain its vote bank in the upcoming by-elections, said the workers, who were too occupied in the day giving final touches to their meeting Friday evening.

Talking to APP, the JI activists shrugged off any possibility of their candidate's withdrawal in favour of their ally party, saying this would amount to abandon people who have reposed their confidence in them even in most difficult conditions.

"In-fact this confidence is mutual as even against heavy odds we continued with our social-cum-political activities, mainly focused in keeping the people on board vis-a-vis their religious obligations and responsibility towards the society in general," said Aliya Mansoor, a senior activist of Jamaat-i-Islami and resident of F.B. Area.

Claiming that nothing could deter them during most of last 20 years, she said that people of the constituency were not naive and they could decipher even the messages between the lines and for them JI was the main hope.

"They are with us as over the years they have witnessed conversion of the city of enlightened, educated and tolerant people into absolute disillusion and at this particular point fresh entrants in the field must not pin any hope to gain their confidence," said Swaleha Tahir.

The JI workers reminded that 31,000 votes that the PTI candidate bagged in this constituency during the 2013 general election, were actually anti-MQM votes that went to the PTI after JI's boycott.

This must be mentioned that the total number of registered voters in NA-246 is 357,781, including 196,187 male and 161,594 female. Large parts of F.B. Area, Liaquatabad, Musa Colony, Karimabad, Bandhani Colony and a number of other areas fall in this constituency.
