railwaysISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways have spent more than Rs. 253 million during the period from March 2008 till date to improve condition of its stations including sanitation system throughout the country.

The breakup of expenditure incurred on renovation and repair shows that the railway authorities spent Rs. 44.049 million at Karachi station during the period, Rs.7.983 million at Quetta station, Rs. 93.231 million at Sukkur station, Rs. 35.679 million at Multan station, Rs. 64.087 million at Lahore station, Rs. 5.378 million at Rawalpindi station and Rs. 2.600 million were spent at Peshawar station.

According to Pakistan Railways here on Sunday, sanitation work at railway stations is supervised by Divisional Medical Officers while Sanitary Inspectors and sanitary workers remain on duty round the clock.

Daily washing of platforms of railway stations is carried out while fumigation is also carried out especially in summer season to kill insect, flies and mosquitoes in the vicinity.

The drains are regularly cleaned to ensure that there is no accumulation of water in station premises.

Special attention is given to keep the bathrooms clean and staff is present on duty for this purpose round the clock. Garbage dumps at railway station premises are disposed off regularly.
