imageRAWALPINDI: Country's textile exports have shown 30 per cent increase after getting the status of GSP Plus from the European Union, President Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) Dr Shimail Daud said here on Tuesday.

"During the first two months of this year, the textile exports have shown 30 per cent increase whereby earning an additional amount of foreign exchange to the tune of $ 105 million," Dr Shimail said while talking to a delegation of traders and businessmen.

RCCI Senior Vice President Malik Shahid Saleem, Vice President Muhammad Alam Chughtai and other members of the chamber were also present on the occasion.

He said the government's endeavors to pull the country out of the economic depression have started bearing fruits as during January-February 2013 the volume of textile exports was US $ 342 million and it swelled to $ 447 million in the current year, after winning the GSP Plus status.

Not only the textile sector exports have shown valuable increase but exports of leather goods also witnessed a substantial surge, adding "In January and February-2014 leather products exports stood at $ 25.46 million."

The RCCI President underlined the need for promoting traditional and non-traditional items in international markets. In this regard, he said, RCCI was already playing its due role by holding single-country exhibitions in different countries to showcase Pakistani products and exchanging trade delegations with SAARC countries.

Besides, Dr Shimail said, RCCI has a plan to arrange such exhibitions in Africa, Central Asian States and Gulf countries for promoting local products.

Highlighting importance of commercial counselors in strengthening national economy, he said their (commercial attaches) appointment on merit and effective role could bring economic revolution in the country.
